DNSSEC public signing key helps protect the Internet against malicious actors who can spoof a domain name by forging the signatures of DNS records in order to manipulate them. It achieves this by adding a level of security to the DNS, and storing cryptographic keys in commonly used DNS record types, such as MX, A, AAAA and CNAME.
What is dnssec?
Domain Name System has been the backbone of Internet connectivity for many decades. It's also the foundation of many new protocol that require secure messaging. Transport Layer Security is one of them, as are encryption keys that only work in zones signed by cryptographic signatures.
It took six messages, and lots of data transfer to change a zone's public key in the olden days. This was because DNS could not handle the Internet's size.
Fortunately the IETF modified DNSSEC for this purpose. This version is called DNSSEC-bis and it uses "delegation signer (DS) resource records" instead of the original six messages. These DS record publish a public KSK fingerprint in the parent zones, and resolvers verify that fingerprint matches DS records from the child zones to authenticate legitimacy of child's key pair.
How does dnssec function?
Dnssec adds an extra layer of trust for DNS records. This layer is designed to ensure that any answer received from a valid DNS resolver corresponds exactly with the authoritative status of the records.
A resolver can verify the authenticity of a zone by checking its associated signatures against its own public key, and also by calculating the corresponding signatures on its own copy of those tokens to confirm that they are valid. This is an important step in making DNSSEC more reliable. It prevents a man-in the-middle attack from injecting false records into the DNSSEC network to trick the resolution process.
The signatures will be encapsulated within a reverse redistribution identity (RRSIG), containing timestamps which limit replay attacks. RRSIG time stamps are absolute, unlike DNS TTL which is relative to the date and time records were sent. Validating resolvers will reject signatures that are not resigned and distributed regularly to secondary server.
Registrants must support DNSSEC, have the tools to generate and sign zones, upload and publish DS records and manage key rollovers. You may be able to meet this requirement by using the services of webhosting companies and DNS management service providers.
