What is Archie?

Archie was developed to provide information for distributed computers. FTP, or File Transfer Protocol (FTP), was the protocol used to link computers in American universities during the 1980s. But users often relied on the word of their friends to find out what they wanted. Alan Emtage Peter Deutsch Bill Heelan set out to fix this problem by creating a database searchable of all the documents available on their computers.

This search script was written by Emtage, Heelan and Deutsch at McGill University in Montreal Canada on September 10, 1990. It was released under the form of a software program that downloaded directories from public anonymous FTP websites, enabling a database to be created of file names.

Archie derives from the word 'archive', and is not related with any comic characters. The name Archie is often associated with comics.

An archie ftp query is a search done online that uses a FTPS (File Transfer Protocol), client, to send requests. The server will then return the matched file or directory to the client. The client then performs a file search on the returned result to see if it matches the requested file or directory.

The filename, or directory, is added to Archie's database when a search has been completed. A search result will be output. The result shows the filename as well as the file that matched and links to its FTP. The results can be used for starting other searches.

How to search for archie files using ftp

Archie must be installed locally on your machine to allow you to conduct an archie search. It is necessary to have an internet connection that allows you to connect to the server.

The Archie client will ask you for the pathname to the archie server on which you want to run the script. Client will tell script when to wait for response from server and when to terminate. This allows you to get the search done as quickly as possible.

The Archie Database will be stored using a FORM Associative Array. The parse_archie_fields Subroutine will use that as a Search Format. The server names, IP addresses and other information stored in the FORM array will be decoded to construct the search. The query field can be found in a variable named query. This variable is retrievable by the program.
