DNS over TLS

web host

DNS over TLS encrypts DNS queries and responses from the Domain Name System. It uses Transport Layer Security protocol in order to protect users from malicious manipulation or eavesdropping DNS data. For websites and servers, DNS over TLS is preferred to ensure the privacy and security for their users.

Protocol security for IETF

DNS over TLS (also known as Transport Layer Security or TLS) provides full-stream encryption between DNS servers and clients. DNS communications can be intercepted and spoofed without this protection. This protocol is described in IETF RFC7858. DNS over TLS is initiated using the well-known TCP Port 853 which allows DNS servers to securely communicate and exchange information with clients.

DNS queries typically go over the Internet unencrypted. Real-world enemies have taken advantage of this vulnerability. Several protocols have been developed to encrypt DNS queries. The first proposal for DNS communication protection was made in 2009. To assess different proposals, two Working Groups were created by the IETF.

Low latency

DNS over TLS allows data to be transmitted between computers in a secure manner. This protocol ensures DNS requests are encrypted upon sending, reducing internet connection latency. DNS over TLS works together with HTTPS to allow traffic to flow through a tunnel. This means DNS traffic will not suffer from HTTP layering and will be protected from on-path attack.

Latency refers to the time it takes for a request to be sent and received. This includes a DNS search, a TCP Handshake, and secure TLS Negotiation. Because the connection is already established, subsequent requests are sent less frequently.

DNS queries can be encrypted

TSL encryption of DNS queries provides extra security and privacy. This protocol protects DNS information from being intercepted, by third-party system such as a malicious site. Even though the protocol is still being developed, more platforms are being compatible with it. Not all DNS servers can implement the protocol natively. The DoT specification also mentions alternative trust mechanisms that are compatible with this protocol.

Encryption of DNS queries over TSL provides the same level of security that HTTPS websites have. It protects DNS information against manipulation, interception and man-inthe-middle attack. DNS over TLS is also an extension of the UDP protocol for DNS queries.

Easy to block

DNS over TLS is becoming a more common practice for websites. This is a more secure method of connecting to your computer. However, there are some drawbacks. It uses TCP port 853, which is easy to block using firewalls and ports filters. Additionally, it creates a measurable overhead, which reduces performance.

DNS over TLS encrypts DNS traffic, queries and responses. It is designed to protect you online privacy and prevent the manipulation or eavesdropping DNS data. It is supported and used by many operating systems. However, not all support it natively.
