What Is a Zone File?

A zone file contains information about the domain names and subdomains of the Domain Name System. The zone files are essential to the operation of DNS servers.

What is a Zone file?

A Zone File is used as the main database by the Domain Name System for translating numeric IP address into domain name. This is a plain text file which can be edited with any plain text editor.

The most popular type of zone files is the com file. It contains a variety of records. These records include nameserver records (SOA), mail exchanger records (MER), host records (CNAME) and start of authority records.

Start Of Authority Record (SOA)

The SOA entry is the first record in a DNS file. This declares authoritative domain information to the nameservers. This record is followed by other resource records that store IP address information and other relevant information about the domain, such as mail servers.

Nameserver Record - NS

The nameservers in a zone are the authoritative DNS servers of a domain. These records recursively resolve other domains if they receive queries by other nameservers.

NS Records are also used for aliases as well as other DNS data. These records are essential to the DNS system and they need to be in all zones so that all names can be resolved correctly.

NXDOMAIN (Message from The Domainnameserver)

The nxdomain is sent by the resolving server when it cannot provide the necessary information to the client because the zone file doesn't contain it. The resolving server will then route the request to the next name server in its list.

PTR Pointer Record

The Pointer Records (PTRs) are a type zone record which specifies the IP Address to which a namepoint is pointing when resolved in reverse. This record can be used to resolve names or specify the IP address for a nxDOMAIN if the zone file doesn't contain one.

This record is particularly important for reverse DNS looksups. The IP address is sent back to the client asking for a namepoint.

A CNAME – Comma-separated name Record

The CNAME records in a zone files are the most commonly used DNS records. These records are used to define a comma-separated name (such as fred.com).

These records are used primarily for name resolution but can be used to define the address of a domain name or nxDOMAIN.

CNAMEs, which can be created or deleted on the user's behalf, are not recommended to be used by the administrator without his knowledge. It is because an unauthorized user could change a CNAME record, making it unresolvable.

DigitalOcean Customers with approved access can use the zone files from their domains to migrate DNS configurations between DNS providers. These files are available in the control panel, under the Overview or Managed DNS menu tabs.
