OpenStack Start Instance: Steps to Create one

free images host

OpenStack start instution is a command which creates an instance on your cloud. This can be done either through the Horizon web interface, or via the CLI.

Instances consist of virtual machines which run within the cloud. Images from multiple projects are used to create them. The instances contain information such as the operating systems, a password and user name, storage of files, and more.

A boot source, a volume, and/or a configuration are used to create the instance. Boot source images can be existing images on your cloud or snapshots.

The bootstrap-image option allows you to create an instance from a snapshot that was taken at a specific time. This option is only available to administrators of your cloud.

To create an instance using a snapshot, you must have a valid volume attached to the snapshot that has enough space to boot the image. If you don't have enough space on the volume to boot up the image, delete it before starting the instance.

Boot source: Select the flavor that best meets your memory, compute capacity, and disk space requirements. Flavors that do not provide enough resources are identified in the Available table with a yellow warning icon.

You must then specify the number and size of disks required by your instance. If your selected flavor doesn't meet these requirements the instance won't launch. A warning will appear in the Available Table.

You can increase the volume size if you select a flavor that meets the minimum requirements. This can be used to store additional software when you use a boot volume.

Once you've selected the network that you want to attach your instance to, you can then select it. The nics parameter can accept a list of networks that you want to attach the instance to, or it can be specified as a net-id/net-name/port-id or port-name string.

You can also specify a floating address. If you use a router, this is a good way to connect the instance with a project's network as well as the external network.

You must connect the project network with a router configured to use the external network as the gateway before you can assign the instance. The external IP addresses must be available on a subnet of the external network.

Then, you must assign the instance to a security group. A security group allows access to your instance via SSH or any other protocol that you have allowed.

After the instance has been assigned a security group you can access it outside of the cloud. Configure the network the instance connects to, and then use SSH to gain access. This is more convenient, but doesn't give you full control over access to the instance.

If you do not want to assign the instance to a security group, you can use the --os-delete-security-group option. This option removes the instance and returns it to its allocation pool.
